Smart Homes

The field of Intelligent Buildings, Intelligent Homes, Building Management Systems (BMS) encompasses an enormous variety of technologies, across commercial, industrial, institutional and domestic buildings, including energy management systems and building controls. The function of Building Management Systems is central to 'Intelligent Buildings' concepts; its purpose is to control, monitor and optimise building services, eg., lighting; heating; security, CCTV and alarm systems; access control; audio-visual and entertainment systems; ventilation, filtration and climate control, etc.; even time & attendance control and reporting (notably staff movement and availability). The potential within these concepts and the surrounding technology is vast, and our lives are changing from the effects of Intelligent Buildings developments on our living and working environments. The impact on facilities planning and facilities management is also potentially immense. Any facilities managers considering premises development or site relocation should also consider the opportunities presented by Intelligent Buildings technologies and concepts.

  1. hi sir, i think this quite amazing when hear this but however Smart home technologies are quite new, thus they have not been widely adopted, for Mauritian context i do think,
mostly because people do not appreciate the value or they do not see that the
value is justifiable. In fact people seem to be quite happy with the way they live now even without these smart home technologies,
therefore the cost would not be justified for the value they would be getting if they were to buy smart home technologies bcos smart home will generate additional expenses to the existing expenses while erecting it (there is a cost behind smart house)

  3. In response to vishal, technologies are being invented to make life easier. If it is easy for one to live without the ongoing technologies then it would be great to know how, about not using your mobile or internet for a day. These are technologies which we have already been adopted as a mean of everyday life.Intelligent buildings and Smart home may be next...so get acquainted...

  5. There are two conditions necessary for Smart houses to become acceptable and more popular:
1-The cost of installing and using the bms in your house should be affordable to everyone.
    2-It should be user friendly.
This will take some time, say 500 years from now.

  6. No matter how much it cost initially,if someone is well informed about smart homes and the benefits they will get in the long run, i do think that we Mauritians will somehow be able to make it happen. In my opinion, the new generation is conscious about the environment and will therefore not miss any opportunity to make use of the modern technologies.
